Los Angeles, CA (January 2014) After winning first prize in the National Urban League's Business Pitch Contest in 2013, home based lingerie business, Sculpted Silhouette (SS) has evolved from bra parties and in-home consultations and officially opened the doors of their appointment only petite lingerie salon in Los Angeles.
Owner Lorne Wellington’s brainchild comes after a five year stint abroad. After using her MBA in the nonprofit sector focusing on HIV/AIDS in South Africa and consulting to small businesses in South Africa and Italy, she spent some time in Paris. While window shopping in Paris, Wellington stopped into a lingerie boutique and for the first time in her life she was correctly fitted for a bra by a professional fitter. “It was as if the heavens parted and the angels swooped down. I knew my bras didn’t work but in an instant I was finally in a bra that did everything it was supposed to. I instantly looked better in my tops and my clothing fit differently. I felt more comfortable because my breasts were up and not dragging my shoulders over due to the weight. To top it all off, they had pretty styles and colors, no more black and nude!” said Wellington. “I come from a lingerie wearing family of women and because of my larger breasts and small back I couldn’t find anything appealing to my taste and in my size. They had it all in that boutique in Paris. I was like a kid in a candy store.”
When Wellington returned to South Africa she treated the local women to bra parties. She later returned to the US, went to FIDM and got her AA in Merchandise Marketing and Management. In 2007, SS was born and the rest is history. Located at Shops @ 5406, SS offers women a variety of bra styles and colors ranging in price from $60-$120. Most of the brands carried in store are European and unlike most retail stores, SS caters to all women, offering bra cup sizes from an A to a K cup.
All clients are treated to a one-on-one consultation with Wellington. Because she is so thorough and takes her time walking each client through the process, a first time fitting can take up to an hour and includes information and education on breast health, caring for bras and a fitting with Wellington, a Certified Fitter. Once the correct size is determined, a client can choose a bra in store or have one imported.
“Her attention to detail and caring manner makes it so easy to take your top off in front of her! She changed my life. I look at photos of myself before and then I look at photos of myself now, what a difference,” said SS client Margaret Thomas.
In addition to lingerie in sizes for all women, Wellington carries specialty bras and products in her salon. In 2008 she created “The Bra Pocket” which allows women who underwent a mastectomy, due to breast cancer, to wear regular bras. The multi-colored disc-shaped pocket transforms almost any bra into a prosthetic bra allowing mastectomy patients the freedom to choose from an array of designs and styles.
“After my mastectomy my only options were those ugly bras with the thick straps. I met with Lorne and was able to get The Bra Pocket into a strapless bra. I hadn’t worn a sundress in 17 years. After getting my strapless with The Bra Pocket I put on a sundress. I was so ecstatic because I looked good,” said SS client and breast cancer survivor Barbara Williams.
Wellington also offers the nursing mother designer maternity lingerie. “Of course I want to sell bras but my main goals are to empower and celebrate women, make them comfortable in their skin and get them into the right fit. If I can do that then I have done my job,” said Wellington.
